First Night Sioux Falls 2008
First Night is a city-wide, non-alcoholic festival of the Arts that celebrates the New Year. It features family-friendly, interactive events and
performances throughout the city during the day and evening of December 31st, New Year's Eve.
The "First Night" concept began in Boston in 1976, when a small group of civic-minded artists created a meaningful alternative to traditional New Year's
Eve revelry. The non-alcoholic community-wide event that celebrates the visual and performing arts spread rapidly, and now, over 100 cities across the
globe hold "First Night" celebrations. The Arts Council is proud to sponsor First Night in Sioux Falls!
"First Night" is a wholesome alternative to traditional New Year's Eve celebrations, and is accessible and affordable to all age groups and demographics.
It promotes cultural diversity, education and the importance of the Arts in the community.

How Can My Family Take Part?
Evening of Art
In ten locations throughout the downtown area, button holders can enjoy simultaneous and continuous indoor performances of dance, music, theatre,
and art. Plan your own special night, choosing the performances you and your family would like to see. Event programs can be found at all Hy-Vee stores
and at each venue the night of December 31. Event venues are closely grouped for limited exposure to the elements. An early countdown will take place
for very young children who will be asleep long before midnight!! A "First Night" button is required for indoor events.* Outdoor events and exhibits
are free to the public.
Grand Finale
The culmination of events takes place in Falls Park. The Horse Barn Arts Center will be open at 9:30 pm -- the winning student SculptureWalk model will
be announced at 10:00 pm. The Falls Park Tower will be open until 11:30 pm. All contribute to a joyous gathering of the community for a New Year's
Eve Countdown and spectacular fireworks at midnight. The Grand Finale will last about 20 minutes and be held outdoors, so no button is required.
Complete First Night schedule available on
firstnightsiouxfalls.org beginning December 1st.
